Small Town, Long History

Dakota City was platted in 1856 and incorporated in 1858, which makes it one of the older towns in the area our concrete contractors serve. It is the county seat of Dakota County, Nebraska. The city counted 1,919 residents in 2010 and 2,081 in 2020, an 8.4 percent increase. Housing units edged up from 657 to 678. With so few new houses each year, most of our work here is on existing homes.

What older concrete looks like

Walks and steps take the worst of our winters. Older lots tend to show:

  • Sidewalk panels lifted by roots or sunk at one corner, creating a trip edge
  • Steps where the top tread has separated from the porch or the house
  • Driveways that have cracked into many pieces, with grass growing in the gaps
  • Garage floors pitted by years of road salt dripping off cars

Each of these has a different fix. A single sunk panel can be cut out and replaced. A set of steps can be torn out and repoured with rebar tied into a new footing. A driveway that has broken into a puzzle usually needs full replacement.

Why steps fail

Concrete steps are heavy and sit on soil that freezes and thaws. If the base under them was not compacted, or water runs off the roof and under the bottom step, they settle and pull away from the house. We fix the cause along with the steps. That can mean a deeper base, a downspout extension or a slight change in grade so water runs away from the stoop.

New steps get consistent riser heights and a broom finish for grip. We can add a landing at the top, which makes entering the house safer in snow.

Driveways and garage slabs

A replaced driveway in Dakota City is usually a single-car or two-car width. We remove the old slab, re-grade, compact a new gravel base and pour air-entrained concrete with control joints. A thicker apron at the street helps where vehicles turn in.

For garages, salt damage is the common complaint. If the slab is structurally sound, cleaning and sealing slows further damage. If it is cracked through and uneven, a new floor with proper slope toward the door is the long-term answer.

Patios and decorative options

Plenty of homeowners want a simple back patio for a grill and table. A broom finish is the most affordable. Stamped concrete adds pattern and color, and it suits a town with older homes when you pick a natural stone look. Either way, we slope the patio away from the foundation.

Rebar, mesh or fiber?

Owners often ask what goes inside the slab. Rebar is steel bar laid in a grid; it adds strength and is our usual pick for driveways that carry trucks and for steps. Welded wire mesh holds small cracks tight in walks and patios when it is kept in the middle of the slab, not left on the ground. Synthetic fibers mixed into the concrete help control surface shrinkage cracks but do not replace steel where loads are heavy. We tell you which we plan to use and why, and it is listed on the written estimate. None of these stop a slab from cracking entirely. They keep cracks narrow and keep the pieces from moving apart, which is what you actually want.

Dakota City Questions

Can you replace just one bad sidewalk panel?

Yes. We saw-cut clean edges, remove the damaged panel, repair the base and pour a new one that sits flush with its neighbors.

Why do my steps keep pulling away from the house?

Usually the base settled or water is running underneath. We repour the steps on a proper footing and fix the drainage that caused the problem.

Can salt-damaged garage floors be saved?

Surface pitting can often be cleaned and sealed to slow it down. If the slab is cracked through or uneven, replacing it is more reliable.
