Flatwork in the Ice Cream Capital
Le Mars calls itself the Ice Cream Capital of the World, and it is the largest town north of Sioux City that our concrete contractors serve. It is the county seat of Plymouth County and sits on the Floyd River. The city had 9,826 residents in 2010 and 10,571 in 2020, a 7.6 percent gain, with 4,521 housing units in the latest census. That mix of older blocks near downtown and newer streets on the edges keeps the concrete work varied.
Higher ground, same hard winters
Le Mars sits at about 1,237 feet, well above the river towns to the south. Weather normals for 1991 to 2020 show about 30.9 inches of snow and 29.99 inches of precipitation a year, with a record low of 37 below zero. Those numbers matter for anything poured outdoors.
Here is what that means in practice: 1. Every exterior slab gets air-entrained concrete so freeze-thaw cycles do not flake the surface. 2. Control joints are cut at the right depth and spacing, so the cracks that will happen run straight and stay tight. 3. New concrete gets no salt in its first winter. After that, sealing every few years keeps deicer brine out of the pores. 4. Fall pours are timed around overnight lows, with blankets ready if needed.
Older homes near downtown
The town was platted three years after its 1866 settlement, and no lots sold until the railroad line south to Sioux City was finished in 1870. The blocks around the courthouse and Main Street carry some of the oldest concrete in the county. Typical problems there are sidewalks pushed up by tree roots, porch steps with crumbling treads and narrow driveways that were never meant for today's trucks.
On these jobs the first decision is repair or replace. A step with a cracked tread can sometimes be resurfaced. A step that has pulled away from the house, or settled at an angle, needs to come out. Old walks are often thinner than modern ones, so we pour the replacement at a full four inches on a compacted base.
Newer streets and outdoor living
On the newer side of town, the requests change. Families want a patio sized for a table and grill, often stamped to look like slate or brick. Some want a wider driveway, a parking pad for a camper, or a slab for a garden shed. A few want a detached garage, which starts with a properly built floor slab with thickened edges.
Stamped concrete is poured, colored and patterned the same day, then sealed after curing. It costs more than plain broom finish, but it gives a finished look in one pour with no pavers to shift or weeds between joints.
Business slabs
Le Mars is home to Wells Enterprises, whose ice cream plant covers 900,000 square feet. That plant is far beyond our scope, but local shops, offices and farm-related businesses often need sidewalks, small parking pads or a shop floor. We quote those the same way we quote homes, with base, thickness and reinforcement spelled out.
Questions worth asking any contractor
Before you sign, ask how deep the base will be, whether the mix is air entrained, how far apart the joints will go and when the slab can take traffic. Clear answers to those four questions tell you a lot about how the slab will hold up.
Permits and next steps
We check whether the city requires a permit for your project and handle the paperwork side with you. Call (712) 482-2303 or send the form, and include a few photos if you have them. We will set a time to measure and give you a written estimate.

Le Mars Questions
Can my old Le Mars porch steps be resurfaced?
If the steps are solid and only the surface is worn, resurfacing can work. If they have settled, cracked through or pulled away from the house, replacement is the better choice.
Is stamped concrete a good choice in Le Mars winters?
Yes, as long as it is air entrained and sealed. Sealing every few years keeps water and salt out. Avoid metal shovel blades that can scratch the sealer.
Can you pour a pad for an RV or camper?
Yes. We size the pad to the unit, use a thicker slab and a well-compacted base, and slope it so water drains off.
