Concrete in the Union County Seat

Elk Point is the county seat of Union County and one of the South Dakota towns our concrete contractors serve along I-29. It was incorporated in 1873 and named for the elk once common in the area. The city had 1,963 residents in 2010 and 2,149 in 2020. Housing units rose from 830 to 903 over that decade, so there is a mix of long-standing homes and newer construction.

A practical list for Elk Point homes

In a town this size, most concrete projects fall into a few groups:

Front of the house. Sidewalks, front steps and the driveway. These see snow shovels, salt and foot traffic every winter, and they are often the first things to crack.

Back of the house. Patios, grill pads and walkways to a garden or shed. Here owners have more freedom to choose stamped concrete or a colored finish.

Outbuildings. Garage floors and shed slabs. These need a strong base and thicker edges because the walls sit on them.

Repairs. Crack sealing, step rebuilding and single-panel replacement.

Ground and water

Elk Point sits at about 1,125 feet, a little above the river bottoms that lie to the south. Even so, low spots on a lot can hold water after spring melt. Concrete fails fastest when water sits under or against it and then freezes. We look at where the water goes before we set any forms. Sometimes a few inches of extra grade at the house makes the biggest difference in how long a patio or walk lasts.

How we build a driveway here

We start by removing the old slab and any soft soil. Then we place and compact a gravel base in lifts. Forms go in at the right slope, and we add rebar or wire mesh depending on the slab and how it will be used. The pour uses air-entrained concrete. We finish with a broom texture for grip, cut joints the same day, and keep traffic off until it has cured.

The result should stay flat and drain well for many years, with cracks, if any, staying in the joints where they belong.

Stamped concrete in a small town

Stamped concrete is not only for big suburbs. In Elk Point it works well for a back patio, a front walk with a border, or a pad around a fire pit. We pick a pattern and color with you on site. After curing we seal it, and we recommend resealing every few years to keep color and protect against salt.

Older homes and Main Street

Elk Point's history goes back to a Hudson's Bay Company trading post established near here in 1755. Many homes near downtown are decades old, with original walks and steps. Old concrete is often thinner than today's standard and may lack reinforcement. When we replace it, we pour to current thickness and add reinforcement where it helps. Elk Point counted 903 housing units in 2020, with about 5.4 percent vacant, so most houses are lived in year-round and their front concrete gets daily use through every winter.

When to call

Spring and early summer are the busiest pouring months, and fall work depends on the overnight lows. A good plan is to call when the snow melts, get the estimate, and pick a date before the calendar fills. If you are replacing a driveway, think about where you will park for the week it cures. Street parking or a neighbor's driveway usually works fine.

Elk Point Questions

Do you serve Elk Point and the rest of Union County?

Yes. We work in Elk Point and nearby towns along I-29. Call and we will set up a time to look at your project.

Should I use rebar or mesh in my driveway?

Both can work. Rebar gives more strength for heavy vehicles and thicker slabs. Mesh helps hold small cracks tight. We recommend one based on your driveway's size and use.

How soon can I park on a new driveway?

Foot traffic is usually fine after a day or two. Wait about a week for cars, and longer for heavy trucks or trailers.
