Concrete Near Brown's Lake

Salix is a small Woodbury County town on the floodplain of the Missouri River, near Interstate 29, and our concrete contractors serve it on the run south from Sergeant Bluff. It was named for the grove of willows, or salix, near the original town site. A post office has operated here since 1874. Salix counted 295 residents and 146 housing units in 2020. Brown's Lake and Snyder Bend County Park are close by.

The ground under Salix

Willows grow where the ground stays wet, and the name fits. Floodplain soils hold water, and the water table can sit close to the surface in spring. For concrete, wet ground is the main enemy. Saturated soil freezes and lifts slabs, then softens and lets them settle.

On a Salix job we plan for that:

  • A deeper gravel base, compacted in layers
  • A finished slab set slightly above the surrounding lawn
  • Slope that sends water off every edge
  • Downspouts moved so roof water does not land next to the slab

Fewer homes, older concrete

Housing in Salix has gone from 160 units in 2000 to 146 in 2020. There is very little new construction, so most of the concrete in town is decades old. Typical jobs are driveway replacement, new front steps, a few sidewalk panels and garage floors that have cracked or settled. With only 295 residents counted in 2020, Salix is the smallest Iowa town we list, and its housing stock has shrunk rather than grown since 2000.

Driveways that stay flat

A driveway on wet ground needs more under it. We remove the old slab, dig out soft soil, bring in crushed gravel and compact it before pouring air-entrained concrete. Reinforcement helps hold any cracks tight. Joints are cut on the day of the pour so cracking follows straight lines.

Steps and walks

Steps are heavy and settle if their base is weak. New steps get a footing, rebar and a broom finish for grip. Walks are poured at full thickness on a compacted base, with a slight cross-slope so water runs off into the grass.

Patios and outdoor space

A patio near Brown's Lake country is a good place to spend a summer evening. Plain broom finish or stamped concrete both work. We keep the patio slightly above grade and sealed, so spring water and winter salt do less harm.

Sheds and outbuildings

Shed slabs on floodplain ground get the same treatment as driveways: a deeper base and a surface above grade. Thickened edges carry the walls.

Boat and trailer pads

With Brown's Lake and Snyder Bend nearby, some owners keep a boat, camper or trailer. Parking it on grass leaves ruts, and gravel spreads into the yard. A concrete pad keeps the trailer level and gives you a clean place to work on it. We size the pad to the unit, pour it thicker than a patio and set it on a deeper base. A pad next to the driveway can share its apron, so you do not need a second curb cut.

Garage floors on wet ground

A garage slab that holds water near the door usually means the outside grade has risen or the slab has settled. When we replace it, we pour with a fall toward the door and set the apron so water drains out, not in. A vapor barrier under the garage slab can also cut down on dampness rising from wet soil below.

Salix Questions

Should a slab in Salix sit higher than the yard?

Yes. On floodplain ground, setting the slab slightly above grade and sloping it away from the house keeps water from collecting along the edges.

Is a deeper base worth the cost?

On wet ground, yes. The base is what keeps a slab flat through freeze-thaw. A thin base on saturated soil is the most common reason slabs fail here.

Can you pour near Brown's Lake?

We serve homes around Salix, including near the lake. We look at the ground and water table on site before recommending a base depth.
