Sergeant Bluff Then and Now

Sergeant Bluff started in 1852 as Sergeant's Bluff City, the first town in Woodbury County, and today it is the first town our concrete contractors reach heading south from Sioux City on I-29. The name honors Sergeant Charles Floyd of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, who died in 1804. The town was incorporated in 1904, the centennial of his death. A century later it is still growing fast.

More homes every decade

The census tells the story. Sergeant Bluff had 3,321 residents in 2000, 4,227 in 2010 and 5,015 in 2020. Housing units went from 1,176 to 1,499 to 1,822. That means roughly a third of the homes in town were built in the last twenty years or so.

Newer homes bring a predictable set of concrete needs:

  • Driveway widening once the family adds a third vehicle
  • Patios that replace a small builder slab or a worn deck
  • Stamped concrete for a finished outdoor space
  • Shed and garage slabs for storage in the back yard

Older homes near the original town need a different list, mostly sidewalk and step replacement and driveway tear-outs.

Two kinds of ground

Sergeant Bluff sits at the edge of the Loess Hills, and Interstate 29 cuts through town, with homes on one side and industry on the other. To the west, the Port Neal area is very flat because it was once part of the Missouri River floodplain. Sioux Gateway Airport sits just west of town.

The hill side and the flat side behave differently under a slab. Loess on the slopes is firm when dry and weak when saturated, so drainage and compaction come first. Low, flat ground near the old floodplain holds water longer, so slope and a good gravel base matter more there. We look at both on every site visit.

Building slabs that outlast the first winter

Most early concrete failures come from three things: a weak base, missing joints and freezing too soon. We avoid all three. The base gets compacted in layers. Control joints go in at a spacing that matches the slab thickness. Exterior pours use air-entrained concrete, and we plan around overnight lows in spring and fall.

For driveways, we often thicken the slab where it meets the street, since that is where the heaviest loads land. For patios, we pitch the surface away from the house. For a shed slab, we thicken the edges so the walls bear on solid concrete.

Repair or replace?

Not every cracked slab needs to come out. Hairline cracks can be cleaned and sealed. A sunken walk panel can sometimes be lifted. But a driveway with many intersecting cracks, a heaved section and crumbling edges is usually past saving. We will tell you which group your concrete is in, even if the answer is a smaller job.

Timing around the school year

The Sergeant Bluff-Luton School District runs four schools in town, and plenty of families plan outdoor projects for summer break. If you want a patio ready by the Fourth of July or a new driveway before school starts, call in spring. That leaves room to schedule, pour and cure without rushing the job or pouring into a cold snap in fall.

Sergeant Bluff Questions

How wide should a three-car driveway be?

It depends on your garage doors and how you park, but most three-car drives flare from the street to roughly the width of the garage. We measure your doors and lay it out on site.

Can a new patio go where my old deck was?

Usually, yes. We remove the deck footings, build a compacted base and pour a patio that slopes away from the house. A step down from the door is often needed.

Is my newer home's driveway worth repairing?

If the cracks are few and the slab is level, sealing them is a good choice. If sections have settled or broken apart, replacement with a better base is the longer-lasting fix.
