Merrill's Homes and the Floyd

Merrill lies along the Floyd River on U.S. Route 75, about 20 minutes north of Sioux City, and our concrete contractors serve it on the way to Le Mars. The town was named in 1872 for Samuel Merrill, Iowa's seventh governor, and incorporated in 1894. It had 754 people in 2000 and 717 in 2020, with housing units between 294 and 317. Merrill is also where the West Branch, the Floyd's largest tributary, joins the river, which then runs on past Hinton toward Sioux City on its 112-mile course.

River towns and slab movement

Towns along a river valley tend to have lower, wetter ground in places. Water held in the soil freezes and expands in winter, then thaws and softens in spring. Over years, that lifts and drops slabs. Low ground near a river typically produces: 1. Driveway panels that have tipped toward the street or the house 2. Walks with a lifted edge at a joint 3. Steps that have settled at the bottom riser 4. Garage floors with a low spot near the door

The fix is almost always about the base and the water, then the concrete. The West Branch, about 40 miles long, is the Floyd's largest tributary and joins the main river at Merrill, so two channels drain through the area.

How we rebuild a failing slab

We remove the old concrete and dig out soft soil. A gravel base goes in and is compacted in layers, which drains and resists frost far better than native soil. Forms are set to a slope that carries water off. We pour air-entrained concrete, broom the surface, and cut control joints the same day. Steps get a footing and rebar through each riser.

Patios for older homes

Many Merrill homes are long established and never had a proper patio, or have a cracked slab from decades ago. A new patio adds a lot of summer living space for the money. Broom finish is affordable; stamped concrete with a natural stone pattern fits well with older houses. Either way, the patio slopes away from the foundation.

Outbuildings

Sheds, small shops and detached garages are common around town. The slab is the foundation of the building, so we pour it with thickened edges where walls bear and reinforcement through the field. Tell us what you plan to store or park so we can size it right.

Repair options

Not every crack is a crisis. Narrow cracks in a level slab can be sealed. Spalled surfaces on otherwise solid concrete can sometimes be resurfaced. When sections have dropped or broken apart, replacement is the better value, and we explain why.

Grill pads and small slabs

Not every project is a full patio. A small pad for a grill, a smoker, a hot tub or a set of trash cans keeps those items off the grass and out of the mud. Small slabs still need a compacted base and a little slope. A hot tub pad needs extra thickness because a filled tub is heavy. These are good add-ons when we are already pouring a driveway or walk at your house.

Matching new work to old

New concrete is lighter in color than old concrete and takes months to weather. When we replace one section of a walk or driveway, it will stand out at first. Over a season or two the difference softens. If an exact match matters, replacing the whole surface is the only sure way.

Merrill Questions

Why does my driveway tip toward the house?

The base under that end has likely settled or washed out. Replacing the slab on a compacted gravel base, sloped toward the street, fixes it for good.

Can you resurface a flaking sidewalk?

If the concrete underneath is solid and level, yes. If the panels have moved or cracked through, replacement works better.

Do you serve homes outside Merrill?

Yes. We cover the Highway 75 corridor between Sioux City and Le Mars, including rural homes.
